For more than five thousand years Iraq has maintained a tradition of relying on education as a tool for progress. It was the epi-center of the scientific world for more than 3000 years. The first era was that of the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian cultures of Mesopotamia (3400 - 400 BC). The second era was of the Abbasyd Caliphate (750 - 1258 AD). Currently it is sadly lagging but most Iraqis realize that education is a must. DY Dec. 8, 2009
