The image shown shows the cities buildings encircled by a protective wall (early 20th century). Just above it may be seen the Milwiya with its rectangular mosque. This mosque used to be the largest in the world. Currently (2009) it ranks the seventh largest. The Milwiya functioned as a minaret for the mosque and possibly other functions.
A very impressive, large military barracks/compound by the Tigris river (on its west side) which enclosed stables, quarters and other buildings lies 15 kilometers south of Samarra. Because of its equine content it carries the name of 'Samarra Stables Military Camp'.(26) This camp had an area within its main walls of more than 17 million square feet. See satellite view below. A better view may be seen at Map. Military forces were generally preferred kept outside municipalities as the members of the armed forces tended to be unruly and arrogant. This was also a factor which helped protect the caliphate as commonly the Caliphal Palace would be situated close to military forces for protectection.
